It's THAT time of the year again - the Salone del Mobile is just around the corner and the entire design world is in a frenzy. Between our preparations and the shear anticipation, CHP is no exception.
It has been three years since our last collection Body Stories debuted.

Which means CHP is excited to present our brand new collection, Global Identity, to the world!

Global Identity

For millennia jewelry has acted as symbol and signifier of a wearers identity. We broadcast our status, affiliations, and beliefs through adornment. In what way does a global perspective change not only what we put on the body but also what we make for the body? How does the idea of global affect our personal, cultural, and national identities?

For millennia jewelry has acted as symbol and signifier of a wearers identity. We broadcast our status, affiliations, and beliefs through adornment. In what way does a global perspective change not only what we put on the body but also what we make for the body? How does the idea of global affect our personal, cultural, and national identities?

Designers and artists from different continents were invited to think about these questions and to design a new piece of jewelry that might show our global identity, or that reflects on global issues.

Salone del Mobile Report 2012, Ventura Lambrate
Milan, Italy

Golden Nuggets by Chris Kabel

For the first time in five years Chi ha paura...? returned to the Salone del Mobile to present a selection of works from the core collection including recent additions from our latest project ‘Body Stories’.
Highlights included the very first CHP piece, Marc Newsons Orgone bracelet, the Marcel Wanders Nose and the Bone structures necklace by Campana brothers.

The presentation had to be airplane friendly so by design of Gijs Bakker the show was set up with simple steel cables, hangers and crisp white shirts to display the jewellery – evoking the body, but also referring to Milan’s heritage as a fashion city.

With Ventura Lambrate being the Salone’s hot spot, Chi ha paura...? had over a thousand visitors a day. Many were excited to see us back in Italy and many more discovered us for the first time. Over six days CHP was sought out by designers, international press, museum curators, design collectors and of course, fans.

The aim of CHP is to bring the world of design together with production jewellery. Our visitors were happily surprised to learn that it was not just an exhibition of prototypes but a presentation of our sales collection. You could look, touch and HAVE!

The lowlight of our time at the Salone? Having to briefly close our space for the Italian forensic police after someone attempted to steal Tjep.'s Bling Bling!

Fortunately this event was easily outweighed by the overwhelmingly positive response to our presentation, great sales and the many visits by Chi ha paura...? designers.

Many thanks to our latte macchiato master at Caffe Del Borgo, to the most wonderful print shop in Milan, Graphidea, to all our fellow exhibitors at Undai 4 and especially thanks to everybody that visited us!

We will be in Milan again next year - Ciao, al prossimo anno!

Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich acquires 'Moonwalk - necklace'

Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich has acquired Konstantin Grcic's 'Moonwalk - necklace' for it’s permanent jewellery collection.

Since 2004, Die Neue Sammlung has been showcasing contemporary international jewelry art in the Pinakothek der Moderne which means that for the first time one of the most varied contemporary forms of artistic expression has found a permanent home in a museum of this kind, alongside art, architecture, graphic art and design.

The starting point for this is the Danner Rotunda, which presents contemporary works from over one hundred international goldsmiths, thanks to the Danner Foundation’s commitment and its jewelry collection which forms the core of this exhibition.

CHP is proud that Konstantin Grcic's 'Moonwalk - necklace' will now be part of the permanent collection.

Retrospective 'Chi ha paura...? - Who's afraid' at Vicenzaoro

For Vicenza's leading gold and jewellery fair 'Vicenzaoro' in May of this year, CHP was invited for a retrospective exhibition. Curated by critic/art-historian Alba Capellieri, the exhibition was warmly welcomed by the city of Vicenza. Many visitors enjoyed strolling through the corridor formed by sea containers placed in Vicenza's popular shopping district. The brightly lit perspex cases showed the entire collection of prototypes and designs ever made for CHP during its seventeen-year existence in which it put conceptual jewellery on the map. Also the complete new Body Stories collection was on show for the first time.

Lecture: Concept Over Craft

Lecture by Gijs Bakker
Wednesday, March 4th, 19:00
California College of the Arts
Design and Craft Lecture Series Spring 2009

Since the beginning of Gijs Bakker’s career in 1965, Bakker has sought to free himself from the heavy tradition of the jewellery field, seeking independence both artistically and economically. Without clients and commissions, Bakker could experiment, giving full attention to the concept, and become radical. Bakker was able to reach this freedom by having two directions in his career – experimental jewellery and industrial design.

The natural outcome was a conceptual approach. Bakker developed his own criteria for his work, asking: what is the meaning?, what does it say in the political and social context of today?, and, who is it for?

The limitations within craft, being oriented towards material and technique, do not align with Bakker’s attitude. For Bakker, it is always the concept which dictates the material and the technique to visualize the concept in the most ideal way, based on his subjective opinion, of course.

Echo at S1NGLETOWN

Echo by Marko Macura is exhibited at S1NGLETOWN by Droog and KesselsKramer, at the Architectural Biennale in Venice.

Echo by Marko Macura is exhibited at S1NGLETOWN by Droog and KesselsKramer, at the Architectural BieDesign for a single future: KesselsKramer and Droog explored the implications of the ‘demographic timebomb’ which means that up to one third of the population will be living on their own by 2026.

A change is happening in western society. The rise of the single. From the United States to Japan, from the United Kingdom to the United Arab Emirates, more and more people are living apart from the traditional family unit, living on their own. Young urban professionals choose to stay single for longer, old people without partners live for longer. In spaces designed for multiple occupancy we find only one. In vehicles with four seats, we routinely find a solitary driver, and in beds made for two, only one lays down to sleep.

Through the eyes of nine different ‘single’ types, from the recently bereaved to the young urban professional, singles are paired with products and services that most fit their lifestyle. These products range from high-technology lighting concepts to clothing and smart storage solutions.

S1NGLETOWN is part of Out There, Architecture Beyond Building, this year's Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Aaron Betsky and on view to the public from 14th September to 23rd November 2008.

Triadic is 25 years young

Triadic Bracelet, designed by Charles Marks (1937-2002), was conceived in 1982 as part of a on-going programme of research into the cube as a generator of form. The Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art in Amsterdam purchased the first exemplar in solid gold that same year.
By changing the material into stainless steel the Triadic Bracelet became so flexible that almost every hand fits. The Triadic bracelet can be worn singly or in constellations of three and more.
The Triadic Bracelet is easy to wear, easy to handle and easy to combine with every outfit. Compose your own constellation of Triadic Bracelets and buy them at your local (jewellery) shop.

Chi ha paura...? presents Rituals

PRESS RELEASE

During the Salone del Mobile in Milan (18-22 April 2007), the new Chi ha paura…? project ‘Rituals’ will be shown in Labo.Art, via Maroncelli, 14, Milan, daily from 11.00-21.00 hours.

Rituals

A piece of jewellery is a small object that can be of great significance to a person. People and jewellery are inseparable from each other: jewellery having a human scale, humans putting a meaning on jewellery.
A piece of jewellery is not merely a decorative ornament; it usually has a meaning, which might be personal, because it marks an event, a celebration, a loss or an identity. These meanings can also be universal, recognisable in society.
In industrial and secular society rituals have lost their meaning: initial rites de passage are not known to us anymore, death and funeral rituals have become standardised. Yet, jewellery is part of a familiar ritual such as marriage, and jewellery is present in military and other official decorations. What has happened to the human and social rituals?
Is it possible to develop new rituals in modern life? Does it already exist, without us really recognizing it – in group identities, life styles? And what kind of role can contemporary jewellery play in rituals?

The theme ‘Rituals’ inspired 14 international designers to design reproducible jewellery of an outspoken character, offering fresh and humanistic views on rituals.
Bless designed and made a necklace Winterjewellery, soft and comfortable as a scarf, referring to knitting as a ritual of hominess.
Chris Kabel designed Fladder, a decorative fan which will determine the streets more and more now our summers lengthen and become hotter, and power failure could prove to be a regular recurring phenomenon.
Heartbreak, designed by Tjep, is a little golden hammer and ceramic heart, coated with rubber on the inside. Thus the broken heart expresses the state you are in, while the act of smashing can be felt as a relief.
Frédéric Braham’s brooch Bonbons très Bons are ‘sweets’ which refer to modern life which without pills is almost unimaginable for most people: a pill for some ailment or other and for every kind of party
The Greeting Necklace and Peace Ring of Gijs Bakker investigate new ways of greeting are in our multicultural society a way for young people to show to which group you belong or wish to belong.
Katja Prins’ Bound by Blood brings together and mixes various prayer-necklaces, which only differ in details, a contemporary blood red jewel is created referring to our mutual bond as well as to the blood shed in the name of a religion.
The Wishbone necklace, designed by Michael Leung, is made of porcelain and together with a friend can be broken in half.
In the old days, Catholic children used to have a Madonna medallion pinned on every morning, significant little symbols for protection and remembrance. An old lost ritual that has been revived by Ruudt Peters in his design, Picture Medaillon.
The Kawari Dama by Susan Pietzsch is a string of beads made from coloured sugar with lover beads inside. It is intended for pleasure derived from a private ritual, the enjoyment of slowly sucking the beads and the unexpected find of a concealed preciousness.
Earth Ring ritualizes our sense of place. Warwick Freeman gives back the bond with the earth beneath our feet.
Last the Blast, designed by Susan Cohn, is a container designed to survive bomb explosions and other disasters. The two labels can be used for personal details as a way of identification, or for a personal message addressed to the next of kin.
Lin Cheung’s Friend or Foe? is a long tape measure of transparent PVC with red imprint, to be worn as a necklace. Instead of inches designations are given to assess the other person’s nature: friend or foe?
Abschiedsfest from Constanze Schreiber are a bracelet and ring, which may put a special meaning on the mourning ritual.
Wedding Pills, designed by Ted Noten, are golden alternative wedding rings with a traditional inscription with the name of the loved one and the marriage date. They can be taken with a glass of vodka or other beverage. Because of the intimate process these pills undergo a fundamental question is laid bare: are we going to search for it or not, it may provoke the first marriage crisis. And with whom it agrees, the ritual can be repeated after each crisis – a nice reconciliation ritual.

The photography is by Wouter van der Brink and Brecht Duijf. ‘Rituals’ has been made possible thanks to SM’s (Stedelijk Museum ‘s-Hertogenbosch) and the Mondriaan foundation, Amsterdam.

Singled out: Peter Skubic

Last year well-known Viennese artist Peter Skubic celebrated his seventieth birthday with a series of exhibitions in several German and Austrian galleries and museums. This same year, in Hanau, he was awarded the Association for Goldsmiths Art-Golden Ring of Honour. The ring has been presented since 1933 to internationally recognised, highly regarded gold and silversmiths from Germany and other countries.

Peter Skubic's ring design 'Hello', which he designed for CHP is to be taken lightly and shows very well the scabrous, provocative side of his work, which has been as characteristic throughout the years, as his more ordered and constructed side.

The publications Peter Skubic Between Jewellery (Arnoldsche 2001. ISBN 3-89790-156-0) and Peter Skubic Spiegelverkehrt ( Munchen, Verlag Marianne Schliwinski, Jurgen Eickhoff, 2005. ISBN 3-924494-30-4)-both still available-focus on the phenomenon Skubic.

The exhibition "Peter Skubic-Schmuck"is still to be seen in the Kunstlerhaus in Vienna till January 8, 2006

Moon Walk renewed

Thanks to the research done by our production team a new ink it is now possible to produce the Moon Walk by Konstantin Grcic in such a way that outdoor influences like light, seawater and perspiration have been excluded. The necklace sticks beautifully to the skin because of the static fixing synthetic material that has a natural adhesion.

CHP update

Since the successful launch of the exhibition 'What's Luxury?' in april 2005 in Milan, the collection was extended with nine new items of well-known designers like Studio Job, Wieki Somers, Ineke Hans, Frank Tjepkema and BLESS.
Some of the jewellery of the "What's Luxury?"exhibition are already available for purchase. The delivery period of this jewellery is extended compared to items from the permanent CHP collection which generally takes about one week to arrive.
The webshop has been updated. The images can be downloaded in high resolution from the 'press-area' of the website. Paying with PayPal, recently installed in our webshop, makes the purchase of jewellery easy and safe.
Our permanent collection is always subdued to quality improvement where necessary. Research into the field of lacquers, synthetic materials, ink and techniques continue, like for the Moon Walk by Konstatin Grcic. Thanks to a new ink it is now possible to produce the Moon Walk in such a way that outdoor influences like light, seawater and perspiration have been excluded.

Gold-digger

Photographer Rien Bazen, upon visiting an Amsterdam party saw an elegant lady eating an oyster using her 'Gold Digger' from the CHP collection 'What's Luxury?'.

The new Tord Boontje&Kvadrat collection

The new Tord Boontje&Kvadrat collection, upholstery fabrics and curtains, was launched last Thursday in Amsterdam.
Ten young women serving drinks were decorated with Tord Boontjes tattoo 'Cut Here'. This tattoo resembles the pattern of a fabric for Kvadrat and was especially designed for the new CHP collection 'What's Luxury'. The tattoo design by Tord Boontje can be ordered from our webshop.

What's Luxury

PRESS RELEASE

During the Salone del Mobile in Milan, April 13-17, 2005, the new Chi ha paura…? project ‘What’s Luxury’ will be shown in the Via Giannone 4, Milan, daily from 11 am – 9 pm.

In a spectacular setting, referring to historical luxuries, contemporary interpretations of luxury by international designers will be shown as samples of topical jewellery.
The theme ‘what is luxury?’ inspired 17 international designers to design reproducible jewellery of an outspoken character, offering fresh and humanistic views on modern wo/man’s desire for luxuries. The jewellery doesn’t necessarily refer to costly, expensive, extraordinary and rare commodities, in stead they can have a temporary character that just pleases the senses or mind for a moment.

The layer brooch Bloom Bloom  by Frank Tjepkema (NL) shows the ephemeral character of luxury, transient like a beautiful  flower.
Black Widow: Studio Job (NL) transformed a common symbol, the black spider, into a lush 100% contemporary jewel.
Intimate Luxury: For Ineke Hans (NL) luxury may be confined to the temporary imprint that a golden ring with a hidden message leaves on your finger.
A dragon surrounded by a rose design is the format for Cut Here, a pink coloured temporary tattoo by Tord Boontje (NL), which leaves the user to decide which part to cut and wear.
With the Infinite Border by Matali Crasset (F) any shirt can be transformed into something special, by attaching a line of pure 24-carat gold around a collar or band.
Manga: Fashion designer Connie Groenewegen (NL) designed a clip as a open mouth with a golden teeth, which can be used to drape a beautiful fabric.
The classical looking Memory ring, by Wieki Somers (NL) holds a concealed image which will reveal itself when rubbed.
In his ring Real  Gijs Bakker (NL) plays with the concept of real and fake gems.
The Data Jewel of Swiss Christoph Zellweger is a refined ornament of the digital age, constructed with the aid of new technology.
The ornamental Credit brooch by Joris Laarman (NL) could indeed be used as a credit card.
The Big Pearl Ring, Mina Wu (Taiwan), bears a lens in order to magnify a small pearl on the ring – as may happen in our imagination when something important becomes bigger than real.
The wooden bracelet of the Paris/Berlin fashion duo BLESS (Desiree Heiss, Ines Kaag) creates high fashion on the basis of poor material, by precisely hand copying a cheap wristwatch in carved wood through craftspeople in Asia.
The Foamed Gold Nuggets by Chris Kabel (NL) presents a super light necklace composed of large 24-carat gold nuggets.
The gilded chips fork by Ramon Middelkoop (NL) may be worn as a tie-pin  - always ready to upgrade your fast food.
Precious Stones by Manon van Kouswijk (NL) presents a pebble stone pendant of acrylic with a hidden fossil inside.
For the Diamond Brooch  by Marc Monzo (Spain) a traditional ring with diamond has been ‘blown up’ to the size of a brooch.
The Echo, a necklace composed of semi soft silicon earplugs, by Marko Macura (NL) provides the wearer the non materialistic luxury of a break or a pause from all noise surrounding him.
