RON ARAD - 'NOT MADE BY HAND'
Ron Arad first presented items from the series Not Made by Hand Not Made
in China in 2000, at the Salone del Mobile. The objects were produced in
collaboration with Materialise - 'grown' in a tank by computer-controlled
laser beams. 'The gap between what can be created and modelled on the computer
and what can actually be realized has finally been bridged: virtuoso reality!'
Born in Tel Aviv in 1951. Works in London, where his design agency 'Ron
Arad Associates' has been based since 1951. Currently Professor of Product
Design at the Royal College of Art, London.
Prizes: Designer of the Year, Salon du Meuble, Paris, 1994; Design Plus
Award, Design Centre Stuttgart, 1999; Gio Ponti International Design Award,
Denver, 2001; Oribe Art & Design Award, Japan, 2001.
Noteworthy designs include the 'Well-Tempered Chair', 'Bookworm' and 'London
Papardelle'.
Arad has had numerous solo exhibitions, including: Ron Arad, New Acquisitions,
Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts, 1997, and Before and After Now, Victoria
and Albert Museum, London, 2000.
He has designed furniture and other products for many companies, among them
Alessi, Artemide, Driade, Fiam, Hidden, Ingo Maurer, Kartell, Inflate, Moroso,
Poltronova, Noto-Zeus and Vitra. In addition to furniture and product design,
Ron Arad has also carried out architecture-related commissions, including
The Piper Project, London, 1998 (interior design), The Big Blue, Canary
Wharf, London, 2000 (sculpture) and Selfridges Christmas Windows, London,
2001 (shop windows).
