TED NOTEN - RING 'for whom I love, I am named' Ted Noten's goal as a jewellery designer is to overturn traditional values. His Chew Your Own Brooch (1999), Silver Roll (2000) and Mercedes/100 Brooches (2002) projects explored the potential of repeating, non-identical jewels, all sold at the same price per product or weight. The heart of this minimalist glass ring has been laser-inscribed and only reveals its secret from a single angle. Ted Noten was born in Tegelen in 1966 and works as a jewellery designer in Amsterdam. He studied at the Kunstacademie, Maastricht, and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam. Herbert Hofmannprijs, Munich, 1998; nominated for the Rotterdam Design Prize in 1999 and 2001. Visiting lecturer Design Academy, Eindhoven. Ted Noten's commissions include promotional gifts for the Dutch Labour Party (1998), an annual trophy for the City of Amsterdam (2000) and a chain of office for the Mayor of Emmen (2000). He collaborated with Joost Grootens to design and execute a presentation by the European Ceramic Work Centre (Hidden) at the Salone del Mobile di Milano in 2002. His solo exhibitions include Bloot Eigendom, Galerie Marzee, Nijmegen, 1997; Expositorium Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, 1998; TheSmitCollection, Galerie Louise Smit, Amsterdam, 2001. Recent publication: Gert Staal, Zes Notities bij TheSmitCollection, Galerie Louise Smit Amsterdam, 2001. |
