WIEKI SOMERS - SECRET PLACE Wieki Somers designed a spiral ring in memory metal, which can be twisted and turned many times and stretched to form a legible text. The metal always returns to its original shape when immersed in water. 'The theme of the ring is revealing and concealing. Rolled up, it resembles a solid piece of metal. Jewellery shouldn't be about packaging or decoration. It ought to complement the person wearing it. This ring communicates, but only if that's what the wearer wants.' Wieki Somers was born in Sprang-Capelle in 1976 and works in Rotterdam. She studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Prizes: nominated for the Rotterdam Design Prize and the Nieuwegein Young Designers Award in 2001, on both occasions for her project Muffins When Hard Meets Soft - colourful poufs created by foaming two types of polyurethane in a barrel. The result was an extended series of one-offs to sit on. Projects: Droog Design for Picus, Big Boxes (cigar box designs), 2001; design of oval Hieronymus Bosch tea-cup and saucer for Cor Unum Ceramics & Art and Museum Het Kruithuis, 2001. Solo exhibitions: European Ceramic Work Centre, 's-Hertogenbosch; Talents, solo stand at Ambiente, Frankfurt, 2002. |
